Garance Monziès, or the small treatise of alchemy
by Martine Struzik
"One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light but by making darkness conscious" C.G.Jung
Through her art, Garance Monziès, as an alchemist, shares with us her visions and inner transformations. I met her in a 5 Rythms workshop in Paris.
I did not know she was a painter, but I saw her dance, through fleeting meetings. But despite the fleeting nature of these meetings, I immediately rnoticed something special: her movements, her interiority, and especially her grace. Each time I met her, she let, perhaps without knowing it, and with a real sensitivity, appear large parts of her life that touched me. At least that's what I felt.
I had the opportunity to see her again and see also some of her paintings. I immediatly contacted again the feeling of the first meeting. I remained intrigued, watched her from a distance, not wanting to disturb what was happening in front of me. Her discretion and restraint suited me perfectly. My desire was to meet her beyond words, through her paintings.

It might be because I know the art of having the head in the air that I spent years decorating chairs with images and sentences coming from my parisians dawdlings.

The fairy of forgoten chairs
Article published in Votre Maison Votre Jardin n° 362, April Mai 2008 Text : Nicole Adreev Photos : Christian Hochet
Garance Monziès Loves abandoned chairs. Painting, she gives them a second life and tells stories on them with all her detonating colours and original graphics.
Devoted to her work and discrete, this 28 years old Young woman has more than one trick up her sleeve. After stydying in Hypokhâghne and khâgne, Garance passes a Master of History of Art. An artist at heart, she seeks her expression in painting and writing. One day, she randomly finds her first chair in a flea market in the city. Her first subject. « What interested me right away was to take the chair as a support for my painting. » she says.
Attracted by the variety of shapes, the many facets of this abandoned chairs, she makes hes brushes dance on it, her colours play, as if by magic.
Each chair as shadows and light, open or hidden faces. It’s like a Small theater, a building in cross-section, where floor to floor, different scènes go on simultaneously, touching one another and moving away, intersecting or overlaping. »
Player and playful, Garance dialogues with chairs. She creates situations, plays with characters, words, sentences from her imagination.
« These are thoughts and afterthoughts that circulate from the top to bottom, from left to right, are interpreted, intertwined, make sense or sometimes get lost into the absurd. »
She is happy and proud to combine, throught her créations, her taste for the recovery and her dsire to design a new decorative furniture. Fairy traveler, shed recently did not hesitate when a couple living in London invited her to immerge herself into their universe and create chairs in accordance.
It’s not surprising that her chairs now have a face to face, for a while or forever, with stood up human beings. And one gets to respect these new friends, look at them, and if one ever sits on it, it’s always after a moment of inner reflection, a pause, a little bit of freshness, of happiness and lightness earned.
What amuses me is that very often, we take another chair to watch the intruder become beautiful decorative object in itself."
Garance, who chose this subject for its first expressions, also painted many other formats: bedside tables, doors, headboards ... paintings! With it, the journey in the imagination is assured.
